Congratulations
to several Spanish language students from Sacred Heart Academy who attained
national recognition for excellent performance on the 2010 National Spanish
Examinations. Students from Sacred Heart Academy earned a total of 6 gold,
13 silver and 19 bronze medals along with over 40 honorable mentions.
"Attaining a medal or honorable mention for any student on the National
Spanish Examinations is very prestigious," said Kevin Cessna-Buscemi,
National Director of the Exams, "because the exams are the largest
of their kind in the United States with 125,915 students participating
in 2010." Students from Sacred Heart Academy have a long history
of high achievement on these exams and were taught by Spanish teachers,
Ms. Anne Ceriello, Mr. Damián Gutiérrez, Mr. Walter Kleinmann,
and Mrs. Peggyanne Shaw. The National Spanish Examinations are administered
each year in grades 6 through 12, and are sponsored by the American Association
of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese.

Sister
Helen Prejean Opens the Hearts of SHA Students

On
April 28, 2010, Sacred Heart Academy was blessed to have Sister Helen
Prejean share her remarkable journey to becoming a leading advocate for
the abolition of the death penalty and the lessons of faith and forgiveness
she has learned along the way. Sister Helen is a powerful example of what
it means to truly “live the mission” of inclusive love, unity,
reconciliation and peace and justice. Through her personal experiences
with death row inmates and our flawed justice system, Sister Helen has
seen first hand how capital punishment is legalized vengeance, denying
human beings all sense of dignity. Capital punishment does not heal the
broken hearts of surviving victims or their families. Forgiveness is the
only true way to heal the heart.
Sister Helen captivated SHA’s students with the story behind her
best-selling book Dead Man Walking and how she came to be a spiritual
advisor for death row inmates. Shortly after making the decision to dedicate
her life to serving the poor in New Orleans, Sister Helen became pen pals
with a death row inmate who was convicted of killing two teenagers. Sister
Helen eventually became his spiritual advisor, counseling and praying
with him and eventually accompanying him to the death chamber where she
told him that she would “be the face of Christ for you.” Along
the way, Sister Helen also encountered the devastated families of the
murder victims and began to counsel them, as well. Sister Helen shared
the story of one of the families’ remarkable journey to forgiveness
and the understanding that even the “worst of the worst” deserved
to live with dignity.
As one SHA student observed, “Sister Helen was truly an inspiration.
Her story of compassion and kindness have made me reevaluate my views
on the society we live in.” Sister Helen’s passion and conviction
opened the hearts and minds of all those gathered and made real the power
that forgivess can have in our lives.
Caring
for the Marginalized in East Africa
Rev. Charles P. Keeney, Chaplain at Long Island University, recently returned
to Sacred Heart Academy to share with the students his story of how he
became involved with marginalized women and children in Arusha, Tanzania
in East Africa. He was accompanied by Sister Flora, a Catholic nun from
Arusha, who was traveling outside of her village for the first time in
her life. Father Charlie and Sister Flora spoke to the students about
the plight of women imprisoned in Arusha and what happens to the children
of those women while their mothers are incarcerated. These women are often
incarcerated on false or trumped-up charges so that their husbands can
“get them out of the way” for a while. They are usually not
brought to trial for at least five years, during which time they are forced
to endure horrible prison conditions. What makes their plight even worse,
however, is that the law mandates that the women’s children must
accompany them to prison; if they are pregnant, the women are forced to
give birth in prison. Several years ago, Father Charlie and the students
of the LIU Newman Society began to raise funds to assist the women and
children victimized by injustice in this area of East Africa. Father Charlie’s
on-going efforts have made it possible to build a loving home for these
children, providing them with food, care, and education. It is administered
by Sister Flora and a group of devoted Catholic nuns. The Sacred Heart
students were greatly touched by Father Charlie’s and Sister Flora’s
story and were inspired by their selflessness and compassion.

Ilibagiza to Speak at Sacred Heart Academy
Immaculee Ilibagiza, one of the world's leading speakers
on Peace, Faith and Forgiveness, will be sharing her triumphant story
of survival at Sacred Heart on Tuesday, October 20, 2009 at 7:30 p.m.
Sustained by prayer and clinging to her father's rosary beads, Immaculee
miraculously survived the 1994 Rwandan genocide by hiding for 91 days,
with seven other women, in a cramped bathroom of a local pastor's
home. The New York Times bestsellers Left to Tell: Discovering God
Amidst the Rwandan Holocaust, Led by Faith: Rising from the Ashes
of the Rwandan Genocide, and Our Lady of Kibeho will be available
for purchase. A book signing will immediately follow the presentation.
Tickets are $10 in advance and can be purchased by calling Sacred
Heart at (516) 586-8459. Tickets will be available at the door for
$15. |
