The Guidance Department

At Sacred Heart Academy the focus is on the individual student as she lives and grows as a member of the community. The structure of the school supports this basic goal. A student's overall academic progress is supervised by a fully certified Guidance Counselor who works full-time with the student as she moves through her years of high school. This advocate supports her students with personal, family and social situations. In addition, she works closely with the students so they will be well prepared in understanding the college process and choose the college or university that will best meet their needs.

We are also fortunate to have a licensed full-time Social Worker in our department to assist our students and their parents in a confidential manner when additional support is needed with personal, social or emotional issues.

In addition to meeting with our students on an individual basis, our counseling staff and SHA personnel also meet with small groups of students throughout the year for Guidance Groups where various topics are discussed, i.e. Transitioning to High School, Career Planning, Standardized Testing, Academic Requirements and College Planning, etc. We also work cooperatively with our class Deans in running level meetings and other school events.

We have a state of the art College and Career Center within our building that is fully equipped with lap tops and a wall mounted TV capable of streaming for demonstrations. Counselors are able to meet with students in small groups to assist them as they explore their career and college choices, to navigate them through our Naviance program, to assist them in completing the Common Application and to support them with other programs necessary for the 21st century student seeking a post-secondary education.

Our Director of College and Career Counseling and Academic Services works closely with the students and their parents throughout the students’ four years of high school to discuss scholarship opportunities and college options. The Director also arranges for overnight excursions to various colleges for tours and meetings with admission counselors. She also attends meetings regarding new developments in testing and counseling and also works closely with college and university representatives both on their campuses and when they visit the SHA campus.
