The Arts at SHA

The halls of SHA are alive with the sound of music... the joy of dancing... the creativity of painting... the excitement of theater, and so much more! Fine Arts is an integral aspect of the SHA Experience, through both required courses and electives as well as many extracurricular activities. The Arts Department includes Art, Dance, Music, Media, and Theater.

Beginner Tap and Beginner Ballet are required for freshman and sophomores, respectively. After sophomore year, students can continue studying dance both in the classroom and as part of our Dance Theater, which puts on two performances a year. Students have the opportunity to choreograph some of the performances. Our students' outstanding achievement in dance is highlighted by our annual fall performance of The Nutcracker; indeed, Sacred Heart is only regional Catholic high school that produces a full-length ballet performance each year.

All freshman take a half year of Music and a half year of Art. In the sophomore year, students may opt to continue as Music majors. Music Theory is an area of particular strength at SHA. We are one of the few area high schools that offer AP Music Theory/Advanced Harmony, which prepares students to take the AP Music exam senior year. We also offer Composition for college credit through the High School Program at Molloy College. Students may also train and perform in our Instrument Ensemble, String Ensemble and Chorus. These groups perform at the Christmas Concert and the spring Arts Festival, as well as other events throughout the year.

All freshmen take a half-year each of the elements of art and music. They may then opt to continue as art majors beginning with Studio I, and progress through Studio II Design/Drawing, Studio III Drawing/Painting, Computer Graphics and even create their own portfolio for AP credit.

Drama is offered as an elective to seniors. In addition, a highlight of the school year is our annual musical. In the past, we have produced plays including:  The Little Mermaid, Anastasia, The Wizard of Oz, Annie, Godspell, Footloose, Oliver, Beauty and the Beast, and The Sound of Music. All students can participate through acting, painting and building sets, designing costumes, or working behind the scenes as a Techie.
